8 Ways to Lower Your Electricity Bill With Your Aircon

Simple habits that can cut your aircon electricity cost by 20–40% without buying a new unit.

Your Aircon Probably Uses 40–60% of Your Electricity

In a typical Philippine household, the aircon is the biggest power consumer. Good news: a few habits can make a real dent in that bill without any major investment.

1. Set It to 24–26°C, Not 16°C

Every degree lower increases power consumption by roughly 3–6%. Setting to 16°C and then getting cold and putting on a blanket is the most wasteful thing you can do. Set it to 24–26°C — you'll be comfortable and save 20–30% versus running at 18°C.

2. Use Sleep/Timer Mode

Most modern aircons have a sleep mode that gradually raises the temperature by 1–2°C over 2–3 hours as you sleep. You won't notice (you're asleep and your body temperature drops) but the compressor works less.

Set a timer to turn off after 4–5 hours — you'll maintain comfortable sleep temperature through the night without running it until morning.

3. Clean Your Filters Monthly

A dirty filter forces the aircon to work 15–30% harder to pull in air. This is free to maintain — just rinse the filter under running water and let it dry. Takes 10 minutes.

4. Seal Your Room

Gaps under doors and open windows force the aircon to continuously fight warm air infiltration. A simple door draft stopper (₱50–₱100) can reduce cooling load noticeably.

5. Use a Ceiling Fan Together

A ceiling fan on low creates air movement that makes 26°C feel like 22°C. Run both and set the aircon 2°C higher — the fan uses 30–60W vs. the aircon's 1,000–1,500W.

6. Block Direct Sunlight

Windows facing west get direct afternoon sun that heats your room significantly. Heavy curtains or blinds closed during peak sun hours (12PM–4PM) reduce the cooling load your aircon has to handle.

7. Get Your Aircon Cleaned Every 3 Months

A dirty coil is the single biggest efficiency killer. A cleaned aircon reaches the set temperature faster and cycles less — directly reducing your electricity bill. The cleaning pays for itself in 1–2 months of savings.

8. Check for Refrigerant Leaks

Low refrigerant makes the aircon run continuously without reaching the set temperature. If your aircon runs for hours but the room doesn't cool down, a refrigerant check is worth it.

The Bottom Line

These 8 tips together can realistically cut your aircon electricity cost by 25–40%. The biggest impact: raising the temperature setting by 2°C and keeping your unit clean.
