DIY vs Professional Aircon Cleaning: What's the Difference?
Should you clean your aircon yourself or hire a professional? Here's exactly what each covers and when it's worth paying.
The DIY Option Is Real — But Limited
You can and should clean your aircon filters yourself every month. It takes 10 minutes and keeps airflow good between professional cleanings.
Here's what you can safely DIY:
DIY-safe tasks:
- Remove and rinse the front filters under running water
- Wipe down the outer casing
- Clear any visible debris from around the outdoor unit
That's mostly it. Everything deeper requires partial disassembly.
What a Professional Cleaning Covers
When a GoClean technician comes for a cleaning, here's what actually gets done:
1. Full filter cleaning — same as DIY, but also inspecting for damage
2. Evaporator coil cleaning — the aluminum fins inside the unit. Dirt on these fins insulates them, dramatically reducing cooling. Requires high-pressure water or chemical coil cleaner.
3. Blower fan cleaning — this is the part most technicians skip. The plastic fan wheel accumulates a thick layer of dust and mold that doesn't come off without disassembly. A dirty blower is the #1 cause of musty smells.
4. Drain pan and drain line flushing — the pan collects condensate; the line drains it outside. A blocked drain causes water leaks inside your room and grows mold.
5. Outdoor unit (condenser) cleaning — the coils outside get clogged with dust, leaves, and debris, especially near roads or in areas with trees.
6. Refrigerant pressure check — not cleaning, but caught during the visit. Low pressure is an early warning of a leak before it causes bigger problems.
The Chemical Overhaul Option
For units that haven't been cleaned in over a year, a standard cleaning isn't enough. A chemical overhaul uses a chemical solution to dissolve buildup that water pressure can't remove. It costs more (₱1,200–₱2,000) but restores the unit closer to new condition.
When DIY Is Enough
- Monthly filter rinse between professional cleanings: always DIY
- You have a portable aircon with easy-access internals: follow the manual
- Brand new unit with no buildup yet: monthly DIY filter cleaning is sufficient
When You Need a Professional
- 3+ months since last professional cleaning
- Musty smell (mold in blower)
- Water leaking inside
- Reduced cooling despite clean filters
- Preparing for summer (April–June) or rainy season
The Cost Comparison
A professional cleaning runs ₱500–₱800 per unit. The cost of ignoring cleaning:
- Compressor replacement: ₱5,000–₱15,000
- Water damage repair from drain overflow: ₱3,000–₱20,000
- Higher electricity bills: ₱200–₱700/month indefinitely
Professional cleaning is cheap maintenance insurance.
